Our Situation:
My uncle's real estate had everything imaginable: antiques, farm equipment, coins, jewelry, house goods, and tools spread across an old cobblestone house, two barns, and some land. None of the survivng family were interested in taking the farm. I was the closest relative, co-executor for his estate, and lived a half hour from the farm.

Why we chose Harris Wilcox:
We didn't like the idea of having a series of garage sales: one for antiques, one for household, one for farm tools, etc. With full time jobs and families, no one had the time to devote to this effort. Even if we managed to sell some of the nice pieces of furniture, we thought it would have a negative impact on the appearance and value of the house. Similarly, what would we do with the contents of two barns and a house if we sold the property? We also thought we could spend a lot on appraisers before making a single sale.

Our attorney had first suggested Harris Wilcox to handle the farm equipment. As we learned more about the company, we found they had experience dealing with everything we had to liquidate. We saw several advantages going this route:

1. Harris Wilcox has years of auction experience, a solid reputation, and knows how to draw an audience.
2. They basically "run the show" including advertising, setting-up, conducting the auction, and clean-up afterwards.
3. We didn't know what things were worth, but could rely on their experience and the auction process to bring us the best price possible.
4. We thought selling everything at the same time might offer some synergy.
